Music is considered to be food for the soul, where the lyrics, the instruments are said to take you in places that only the human mind has the capacity to take you and make you feel the things that one must have read of.

Music Thought – Kodaline

It is said that music is food for soul, and that is truly and well said, so today I am not going to write a big post about, music this and music that, but rather just do a list of songs that I have on my playlist and I never tire of listening.

It may also be said that I have a very eclectic taste in music since I love golden classics more than music of my era, and that I listen to English music very rare and if and when I do it just so happens to differ from what my comrades would like to hear. But since last year I have been introduced to an Irish band called the Kodaline, whose songs I apparently have on repeat mode.

Apparently it has so happened that one of my favorites has also been done for the version of original sound track for the movie “The Fault in Our Stars”

Below are some of my favorite songs that are sung by the group and hope you enjoy them as much as I do as well. Listen to this songs and see if your days feel brighter.

  • Brand New Day

  • Love Like This

  • All I want

  • Lose Your Mind

Rain and its Musical Magic

When it rains, there are myriad of emotions and sentiments that one goes through, but for me, when it rains, I just feel like going and being in a different world, sometimes it is in a world of music and sometimes it is within stories, and many a times it could be classics or just simple good movies, which one can never get enough off.

But I would say when it comes to rain I just prefer to lose myself in songs. I am avid listener of classics from the bygone era of Indian film industry, a time the melodies as some would say were soulful, the lyrics were simple and had the power to just take you away from the mundane.

One of the most iconic songs with rain as it is background is “Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua” from Shree 420, with Raj Kapoor and Nargis. This is a song that comes to mind instantly when somebody talks about rain and Indian movies.

Another song that I really like to have on repeat mode when it is raining is “Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna” and “Main Jaahan Rahoon”. I personally feel that one can never go wrong with Sonu Nigam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

It is just not romantic songs that are famous for rain, one song that I recall that is fun and preppy and foot stomping rain song is from Chalbaaz, “Na Jaane Se Kahan Se Aayi Hain”, which was picturize on Sri Devi.

Sometimes a song does not have to be filmed in a rain, and a good example of this is “Jashn E Bahara” from Jodha Akbar, it simply speaks for it self to create the mood that a listener feels to be in.

When it comes to rain, and songs, each and every person would have they own taste, so if you feel that there is a song worth mentioning in this post, drop a mention in comments.

Moon – ચંદ્ર (Gujarati) – चांद (Hindi) – Σελήνη (Greek) – Lune (French)

In many languages and cultures, the beauty of moon has been much talked about and songs have been composed of the moon, and the part it plays in love songs. Many a times even I am astounded by its beauty and the way it illumines with it soft light, creating a surreal calm, with its gentle presence.

Indian movie industry has really made moon a symbol of love, through the numerous songs in many of its movies over the years, be

it the famous Mohammed Rafi song “Chaudvi Ka Chand” or  one of my favourite songs on moon is Chanda Re Chanda Re, from Sapnay, where the song talks in details of how the moon should sometimes journey to earth so that we can sit and chat together.

“Chanda Re, Chanda Re, Kabhi Toh Zameen Par Aa, Baithenge Baatein Karenge
O Moon! Come down to the Earth someday, we’ll sit down and have a chat
Chanda Re, Chanda Re, Kabhi Toh Zameen Par Aa, Baithenge Baatein Karenge
O Moon! Come down to the Earth someday, we’ll sit down and have a chat
Tujhko Aate Idhar Laaj Aaye Agar, Odh Ke Aaja Tu Baadal Ghane
If You feel shy while coming here, cover Yourself with dense clouds and then come

Gulshan Gulshan, Waadi Waadi, Behti Hai Resham Jaisi Hawa (x2)
From the rose gardens to the skies, a silken wind is blowing
Jungle Jungle, Parvat Parvat, Hain Neend Mein Sab Ek Mere Siwa
The jungles, the mountains, and everyone else is asleep but me
Chanda... Chanda… Aaja Sapnon Ki Neeli Nadiyo Mein Nahaaye
O Moon! Let’s bathe in the blue watered rivers of dreams
Aa Ja Yeh Taare Chun Ke Hum Haar Banaaye
Let’s pick stars and make a garland out of them
In Dhundali Dhundali Raahon Mein Aa Dono Hi Kho Jaaye
Let’s get lost in these foggy lanes
Chanda Re, Chanda Re, Kabhi Toh Zameen Par Aa, Baithenge Baatein Karenge
O Moon! Come down to the Earth someday, we’ll sit down and have a chat
Tujhko Aate Idhar Laaj Aaye Agar, Odh Ke Aaja Tu Baadal Ghane
If You feel shy while coming here, cover Yourself with dense clouds and then come
Chanda Se Puchhenge Hum Saare Sawaal Niraale
We’ll ask the Moon all unique questions
Jharane Kyun Gaate Hai Pachchhi Kyun Matwaale
Why do the waterfalls sing and why are all the birds free-spirited
O Kyun Hai Saawan Mahina Ghataon Ka
Why is the Monsoon, the season of clouds?
Chanda Se Puchhenge Hum Saare Sawaal Niraale
We’ll ask the Moon all unique questions
Chanda... Chanda... Titali Ke Par Kyun Itne Rangeen Hote Hai
O Moon! Why do butterflies have such colorful wings?
Juganu Raaton Mein Jaage Toh Kab Sote Hai
If the fire-flies are awake at night, then when do they sleep?
In Dhundali Dhundali Raahon Mein Aa Dono Hi Kho Jaaye
Let’s get lost in these foggy lanes
Aa... Ho...

In Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Sanjay Leela Bhansali of the Ram Leela fame has a truly melodiously  captured the essence of moon in , Chand Chupa Badal Mein , and talks about how the moon shied away in the clouds, which is being compared to the beauty of the protagonist girl, Nandini which was played by Aishwarya Rai Bachan.

There is no shortage of love songs and moon in the Indian Film Industry, another song that comes to mind about moon is, Mera Chaand Mujhe Aaya Hai Najar , Ai Raat Jara Tham Thamake Gujar ( I have seen my moon tonight, so ooh night please pass as slow as you can).

A song that was really popular few years back has been, from the movie Fanaa, which had Kajol and Aamir Khan in starring roles, Chand Sifarish Jo Karta Hamaarii, which is highlighted below with is English translation.

subahaan allaah… God be praised…
chaa.nd sifaarish jo karta hamaarii deta voh tumko bataa The moon gives us its blessings and tells us
sharam-o-hayaa ke parde giraake karnii hai hamko khataa it’s time to drop this veil of modesty and commit a sin.
zid hai ab to hai khud ko miTaana hona hai tujhme.n fanaa I’m determined to obliterate myself, to be annihilated by your love.
chaa.nd sifaarish jo karta hamaarii deta voh tumko bataa The moon gives us its blessings and tells us
sharam-o-hayaa ke parde giraake karnii hai hamko khataa it’s time to drop this veil of modesty and commit a sin.
terii adaa bhii hai jho.nkewaalii chhuuke guzar jaane de You remind me of the wind; touch me as you pass.
terii lachak hai ke jaise Daalii dil me.n utar jaane de You move as sinuously as a reed; plant yourself in my heart.
aajaa baaho.n me.n karke bahaana hona hai tujhme.n fanaa Come, make some excuse to move into my arms; I want to be destroyed by you.
chaa.nd sifaarish jo karta hamaarii deta voh tumko bataa The moon gives us its blessings and tells us
sharam-o-hayaa ke parde giraake karnii hai hamko khataa it’s time to drop this veil of modesty and commit a sin.
subahaan allaah…

I would just like to say, that this post barely does justice to moon, love and music, as the Indian movie industry has done so, but this is a small tribute to moon, and what it signifies, in terms of love to the people of Indian Cinema.

(Note: All the songs mentioned have been hyperlinked to youtube clips of the songs and also to English translations)

English Lyrics to Mera Chand Mujhe Aaya Hain Nazar

ENGLISH TRANSLATION – MERA CHAND MUJHE AAYA HAI NAZAR

MERA CHAND MUJHE, AAYA HAI NAZAR
AYE RAAT ZARA, THAM THAM KE GUZAR
I am able to see my moon
O night pass by step by slowly
CHAAYA HAI NASHAA, MERI AANKHON PAR ….
Intoxication has filled my eyes…
AYE RAAT ZARA, THAM THAM KE GUZAR
O night pass by step by slowly
MERA CHAND MUJHE, AAYA HAI NAZAR…
I am able to see my moon….
[MERE DIL MEIN HAIN ARMAAN KAYEE KAYEE
My heart has several desires…
MERI CHAAHAT HAI ABHI NAYEE NAYEE ]
My love now is new
REH JAYEE NA PYAASA PYAAR MERA
My love should not remain thirsty
MERI BAAHON MEIN BHAR DE YAAR MERA
Fill my arms with my beloved
ITNA SA KARAM TU KAR MUJH PAR

Do me this favour

AYE RAAT ZARA, THAM THAM KE GUZAR

O night pass by step by slowly

MERA CHAND MUJHE, AAYA HAI NAZAR…
I am able to see my moon.
ABHI LABON KO LABON NE CHUA NAHIN
Our lips haven’t touched each other yet
ARMAAN KOI PURA HUA NAHIN ]
Desires haven’t been fulfilled yet
ABHI AAS KA GULSHAN KHILNA HAI
The garden of hope has yet to bloom
ABHI DO JISMON KO MILNA HAI
Do bodies have yet to unite.
DEKHOONGA ABHI MAIN WOH MANZHAR
I will witness that beautiful moment…
AYE RAAT ZARA, THAM THAM KE GUZAR
O night pass by step by slowly
MERA CHAND MUJHE, AAYA HAI NAZAR
I am able to see my moon.
